Mar 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka imposed a curfew on Monday in the central hill town of Digana in Kandy after communal clashes between the Sinhalese and Muslims flared.
The violence flared up after a 41-year-old Sinhala man, a resident of Ambala in Medamahanuwara was allegedly attacked by a group of Muslims in Teldeniya Town on February 22. The victim died on Sunday from the injuries received in the attack.
Subsequently, reprisal attacks, which triggered off on March 5 afternoon, set the Digana town ablaze. Dozens of shops were burnt down causing colossal damage to their owners.
The government condemned the hate and mischievous misinformation campaigns carried out by some, especially via social media, targeting the Muslim community in particular and others as well, with the clear objective of creating disharmony among communities and inciting violence.
Mar 08, Colombo: Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara says that 81 suspects, who instigated communal clashes in the central Kandy district were arrested during the past few days.
Police Media Spokesman said that ten persons including the alleged mastermind of the attacks in the Kandy area were arrested by the Police Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) at Digana and Poojapiitiya today.
Mar 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Speaker Karu Jayasuriya condemning the recent communal clashes against Muslims in strongest terms, yesterday called on upon leaders of all religious sectors to speak out against those who attempt to divide Sri Lanka on sectarian grounds.
The Speaker in a statement said that the sudden surge of violence against Muslims in Kandy and elsewhere in Sri Lanka over the last several days was clearly not representative of any grassroots communal tensions.
The Police Media Unit said the curfew imposed from 6.00 pm Thursday was lifted at 6.00 am today.

Curfew was imposed several times on the administrative district of Kandy due to the conflict situation that prevailed for the past several days.
